Tree Removal

How much does tree removal cost in Southern Wisconsin?

Tree removal costs vary based on size, location, and complexity. Small trees (under 30 feet) typically range from $300-$800. Medium trees (30-60 feet) range from $800-$2,500. Large trees (60+ feet) or those near structures can range from $2,500-$5,000+. Crane-assisted removals for very large or hazardous trees may exceed $5,000. We provide free on-site estimates with transparent, all-inclusive pricing.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Janesville?

In Janesville, you generally do not need a permit to remove a tree on your private property. However, trees in the public right-of-way (between the sidewalk and street) require city approval. Some municipalities in Dane County and other areas have different requirements. We handle permit coordination as part of our service when applicable.

How long does tree removal take?

Most residential tree removals are completed in a single day — typically 2-6 hours depending on the tree's size and complexity. Crane-assisted removals may take a full day. Multi-tree projects or lot clearing can span 2-3 days. We provide a time estimate during your free consultation.

What happens to the wood after tree removal?

We chip all brush and small branches on-site. For larger wood, we can cut it into firewood-length rounds and leave it for you, haul it away, or arrange for complete removal. Stump grinding is available as an add-on service. We always leave your property clean and debris-free.

Can you remove a tree close to my house without damaging it?

Yes — this is one of our specialties. Our ISA Certified Arborists use precision rigging, sectional dismantling, and crane-assisted techniques to safely remove trees in tight spaces near homes, garages, power lines, and fences. Every cut is planned and controlled.

Tree Trimming & Pruning

When is the best time to trim trees in Wisconsin?

The best time depends on the species. Most deciduous trees are best pruned in late winter while dormant (January-March). Oak trees should ONLY be pruned November through March to prevent oak wilt. Fruit trees are best pruned in late winter before bud break. Dead or hazardous branches can be removed any time of year. Our arborists will advise on the best timing for your specific trees.

What is the difference between tree trimming and pruning?

Trimming generally refers to cutting back overgrowth for aesthetics or clearance. Pruning is a more precise, science-based practice that targets specific branches to improve tree health, structure, and safety. Our ISA Certified Arborists follow ANSI A300 pruning standards — the national benchmark for proper tree care.

Why is tree topping bad?

Tree topping is the indiscriminate cutting of branches to stubs. It causes severe stress, triggers weak regrowth (water sprouts) that's more prone to failure, creates large wounds vulnerable to decay and disease, and permanently disfigures the tree. A topped tree is actually MORE dangerous than before. We never top trees — we use proper crown reduction techniques instead.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Most mature trees benefit from pruning every 3-5 years. Young trees should be structurally pruned every 2-3 years to develop strong branch architecture. Fruit trees typically need annual pruning. Fast-growing species or trees near structures may need more frequent attention. We can set up a maintenance schedule tailored to your property.

Stump Grinding

How deep do you grind stumps?

We typically grind stumps 6-12 inches below ground level, which is sufficient for planting grass or landscaping over the area. If you plan to replant a tree in the same spot, we can grind deeper (12-18 inches) to provide adequate root space. The depth is customizable based on your needs.

Can I plant a new tree where a stump was ground?

Yes, but we recommend waiting and preparing the area first. After grinding, we backfill with a mix of wood chips and topsoil. For best results, wait 6-12 months for the wood chips to decompose, then amend the soil before planting. We can advise on the best replacement species for your property.

What about the roots after stump grinding?

Stump grinding removes the stump and major surface roots but not the entire root system underground. The remaining roots will naturally decay over 5-10 years. They typically don't cause problems, but if you notice mushroom growth (a sign of decomposition), that's completely normal.

Tree Health & Disease

What is oak wilt and how do I prevent it?

Oak wilt is a fatal fungal disease that kills oak trees — often within weeks for red oaks. It spreads through root grafts between nearby oaks and via sap beetles attracted to fresh wounds. Prevention: NEVER prune oaks April through October in Wisconsin. If pruning is unavoidable, immediately seal wounds with tree wound paint. Our arborists can assess your oaks and recommend preventive measures.

How do I know if my tree is dying?

Signs include: large dead branches (more than 25% of the crown), bark falling off the trunk, fungal growth (mushrooms/conks) at the base or on the trunk, significant lean that has increased over time, sparse or discolored foliage, and root heaving or soil cracking around the base. If you notice any of these, schedule a free assessment with our certified arborists.

What is emerald ash borer and is it in Southern Wisconsin?

Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive beetle that has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across North America. Yes, it is confirmed throughout Southern Wisconsin including Rock, Dane, Walworth, and Jefferson counties. Signs include D-shaped exit holes, canopy dieback starting at the top, and increased woodpecker activity. Treatment options include trunk injections that can protect healthy ash trees.

Can a sick tree be saved?

It depends on the species, disease, and how far it has progressed. Many tree diseases — if caught early — can be managed through trunk injections, soil amendments, proper pruning, and cultural practices. Our ISA Certified Arborists can diagnose the issue and give you an honest assessment of whether treatment or removal is the better option.

Emergency Services

Do you offer 24/7 emergency tree removal?

Yes. Call (608) 751-4171 any time of day or night for emergency tree service. We respond to trees fallen on homes, blocking roads, leaning on power lines, and other hazardous situations. For true emergencies, we typically arrive within 2-4 hours.

Should I call my insurance company before calling you?

For true emergencies — a tree on your house, blocking your driveway, or threatening further damage — call us first. We'll make your property safe immediately. You can file the insurance claim afterward. We provide detailed documentation (photos, assessments, itemized invoices) that your insurer needs to process the claim.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal?

Generally yes, if the tree damaged an insured structure (house, garage, fence, shed). If a tree falls in your yard but doesn't damage anything, most policies won't cover removal. We regularly work with insurance adjusters and can help you navigate the claims process. See our detailed guide on emergency tree removal and insurance claims.

What should I do if a tree falls on my house?

1) Ensure everyone is safe and evacuate if necessary. 2) Call 911 if there are injuries or the situation is dangerous. 3) Call us at (608) 751-4171 for emergency removal. 4) Document the damage with photos before anything is moved. 5) Contact your insurance company to file a claim. Do NOT attempt to remove the tree yourself.

Commercial & HOA

Do you offer maintenance contracts for commercial properties?

Yes. We provide annual and multi-year tree care contracts for commercial properties, HOAs, municipalities, and property management companies. Contracts include scheduled pruning rotations, health inspections, emergency priority response, and budget-friendly monthly billing.

Why should our HOA hire a certified arborist vs a general tree service?

HOAs face unique liability exposure. If an improperly maintained tree causes injury or property damage, the association can be held liable. ISA Certified Arborists provide documented assessments, follow industry standards (ANSI A300), and can testify to the standard of care provided. This protects your board and homeowners.

Snow Removal

Do you offer snow removal services?

Yes. We provide residential and commercial snow removal throughout Rock County including Janesville, Beloit, Milton, Edgerton, and surrounding communities. Services include driveway plowing, parking lot clearing, sidewalk shoveling, and de-icing/salt application.

Can I bundle tree care and snow removal?

Absolutely — many of our customers do. Bundling gives you priority scheduling for both services, simplified billing through one vendor, and crews that are already familiar with your property. Ask about seasonal contracts that cover both tree care and winter snow removal.

Pricing & Scheduling

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. We provide free on-site consultations and estimates for all tree care services. Our ISA Certified Arborists will assess your trees, discuss your options, and provide a detailed, written quote with no obligation. Call (608) 751-4171 or fill out our contact form to schedule yours.

Do you offer financing for tree services?

Yes. We partner with GreenSky to offer affordable financing options for all tree services. Get approved in minutes with low monthly payments and competitive rates. This is especially helpful for unexpected emergency removals or large-scale projects. Visit our financing page for details.

How far in advance should I schedule tree work?
