Crown Reduction — The Right Way to Reduce Tree Size

When a tree has outgrown its space, crown reduction is the proper alternative to topping. Our ISA Certified Arborists use reduction cuts that maintain your tree's natural form while bringing its size back to where it belongs.

When Crown Reduction Is the Right Solution

Crown reduction is a targeted pruning approach for specific situations. Here are the most common reasons homeowners in Southern Wisconsin need this service.

Tree Growing into Power Lines

Rather than removing a valuable tree, crown reduction can bring the canopy back to a safe distance from utility lines while preserving the tree's health and beauty.

Overhanging Roof or Structures

Branches extending over rooflines cause damage from rubbing, clogged gutters, and increased storm risk. Reduction pulls the canopy back to safe clearance.

Excessive Wind Sail

Large, dense canopies catch wind like a sail, increasing the risk of branch failure or uprooting. Reduction combined with thinning decreases wind load.

Outgrown Landscape Space

Trees planted too close to homes, property lines, or other trees may need reduction to fit the available space without removal.

Heavy, Extended Limbs

Long horizontal branches develop excessive end-weight over time, creating leverage that can cause failure at the branch union. Reduction shortens and lightens them.

View Restoration

When a tree has grown to block a desired view, selective crown reduction can open sight lines while keeping the tree as a landscape asset.

Proper Crown Reduction Technique

1

Arborist Evaluation

We assess the tree's species, health, structure, and the specific clearance goals. Some species tolerate reduction better than others — our arborist ensures the plan is appropriate.

2

Target Selection

We identify the lateral branches that will become the new branch tips after reduction. Each cut point must be to a lateral at least one-third the diameter of the removed section.

3

Balanced Reduction

Cuts are distributed evenly around the canopy to maintain natural form and prevent lopsided regrowth. We reduce no more than 25% in a single session.

4

Monitoring & Follow-Up

We schedule a follow-up in 12-18 months to thin any water sprouts that develop and ensure the tree is responding well to the reduction.

Crown Reduction FAQs

Common questions about crown reduction pruning.

What is crown reduction?

Crown reduction is a pruning technique that decreases the overall height or spread of a tree's canopy by cutting back to appropriately sized lateral branches. Unlike topping, reduction cuts maintain the tree's natural shape and promote healthy regrowth.

Is crown reduction the same as topping?

Absolutely not. Topping makes indiscriminate heading cuts that leave stubs, which decay and produce weakly attached water sprouts. Crown reduction uses proper reduction cuts back to lateral branches at least one-third the diameter of the removed branch, preserving tree health and structure.

When is crown reduction recommended?

Crown reduction is appropriate when a tree has outgrown its space, threatens a structure or power line, has excessive end-weight on extended limbs, or when you need to reduce wind sail area to decrease storm damage risk.

How much can a tree's crown be reduced?

We typically limit crown reduction to no more than 25% of the live canopy in a single session. More aggressive reduction is spread over 2-3 years to prevent excessive stress, water sprout production, and sunscald on newly exposed bark.

Will crown reduction change how my tree looks?

When done properly, the tree retains its natural shape — just smaller. Poor reduction (or topping) creates an ugly, flat-topped appearance. Our ISA Certified Arborists maintain the tree's characteristic silhouette.
