Crane-assisted removal of large trees

How our ISA Certified crew brings down large canopy trees safely — climbing, rigging, and crane support working together.

From Canopy To Ground — Large Tree Removal by Tree Wise Men
Read transcript

This video shows our crew executing a full canopy-to-ground tree removal on a Southern Wisconsin residential property — the complete sequence from initial assessment through final cleanup that every large removal follows in our shop.

The work starts with the lead ISA Certified Arborist walking the property to plan the removal: identifying the lean direction, the targets in the rigging path (structures, landscape plantings, hardscape, adjacent trees), the access constraints, and the optimal staging position for the chip truck. The climber ties in, ascends through the canopy, and begins the top-down dismantling. Each section is rigged before it's cut — chokers, slings, and a friction device on the ground to control the descent. Nothing is dropped or thrown that could damage the property below.

The dismantling proceeds in measured stages: lateral limbs first, then the leader, then the trunk in sections sized to the available landing zone. As each section comes down, ground crews stage it for the chipper or set it aside for log handling. ANSI Z133 standards govern every step — fall protection, rigging redundancy, ground crew clearance from suspended loads, and the communication protocol that keeps the climber and ground team synchronized.

After the trunk is down, the crew chips the brush, loads the logs, and grinds the stump if it was contracted in the scope of work. The property is raked clean and the lawn is restored to pre-work condition. This is the routine — the predictable, ANSI-compliant sequence that defines safe large-tree removal regardless of species or location.

Types of Tree Removal We Handle

Not all tree removals are created equal. A small ornamental in an open yard is a very different job from a 100-foot oak leaning over a two-story home. We match the right crew, equipment, and approach to every situation.

Standard Residential Tree Removal

The majority of our work involves removing dead, dying, or unwanted trees from residential yards. Whether it is a storm-damaged silver maple or a pine that has outgrown its space, our crews handle every residential removal with precision and respect for your landscape. We protect your lawn, garden beds, and surrounding trees throughout the process.

Large & Technical Tree Removal

Some trees require more than a climber and a chainsaw. Trees over 80 feet tall, those with heavy leans, or specimens growing between structures demand specialized equipment and advanced rigging. We deploy crane trucks, aerial lifts, and precision rigging systems to safely dismantle trees that other companies won't touch.

Hazardous Tree Removal

A tree leaning toward your home, hanging over power lines, or structurally compromised by decay is a hazardous tree. These removals require careful planning, specialized insurance, and crews experienced in managing high-risk situations. Our TRAQ-qualified arborists assess the risk and develop a removal plan that protects people, property, and infrastructure.

Fallen Tree Removal & Storm Cleanup

When a tree has already fallen — on your house, across your driveway, or into your neighbor's yard — you need fast, competent response. Our storm damage crews are equipped with grapple trucks and chippers to clear fallen trees quickly. We work directly with your insurance company and can provide the documentation they need for claims.

How Our Tree Removal Process Works

Every removal follows a structured process that prioritizes safety, protects your property, and leaves your yard clean.

1

On-Site Assessment

An arborist visits your property to evaluate the tree, check for hazards, measure access, and determine the right approach. You receive a written estimate with no surprises.

2

Planning & Preparation

We plan the removal sequence, identify drop zones, set up rigging points, and coordinate crane delivery if needed. Surrounding landscape is protected with ground mats and barriers.

3

Safe Removal

Our crew works from the top down, sectioning the tree in controlled pieces using ropes, rigging, or crane lifts. Every cut is planned. Every piece is placed, not dropped.

4

Complete Cleanup

All brush is chipped on-site. Trunk wood is cut and hauled. The area is raked clean and the stump is ground below grade if you choose that option. You would not know we were there.

Tree Removal Equipment & Capabilities

The right equipment makes tree removal safer, faster, and less disruptive to your property. We invest heavily in our fleet so we have the right machine for every scenario.

Crane Trucks

Our 40-ton and 75-ton cranes can lift entire tree sections over homes, reducing risk and ground disturbance. Crane removal is often faster and safer than traditional climbing for large trees near structures.

Grapple Saw Trucks

Hydraulic grapple saws allow our operators to grab, cut, and place tree sections from the truck — ideal for fast storm cleanup and roadside removals where ground crews are limited.

Industrial Chippers

Our brush chippers process limbs and branches on-site, reducing an entire tree's canopy to a truckload of chips in minutes. This means less time on your property and a cleaner job site.

Aerial Lifts & Bucket Trucks

For trees that cannot be climbed safely — dead trees, trees with structural defects, or utility-adjacent trees — our bucket trucks give our arborists a stable platform to work from at heights up to 75 feet.

Stump Grinders

After removal, our stump grinders take the remaining stump down 6 to 12 inches below grade. The resulting wood chips are mixed back into the hole, and you can plant grass, a garden, or a new tree right over the spot.

When Should a Tree Be Removed?

Our arborists believe in preserving trees whenever possible. But some situations make removal the safest and most practical choice. Here are the signs that a tree may need to come down:

More than 50% of the crown is dead or dying
Major trunk decay or large cavities compromising structure
Significant lean that has developed recently (not natural lean)
Root damage from construction, grade changes, or soil compaction
The tree has been topped and regrowth is weak or hazardous
Invasive species creating problems for native trees
The tree is damaging foundations, sewers, or driveways
Multiple large limbs have failed in recent storms

If you are unsure whether your tree needs removal, schedule a free consultation. Our arborist will give you an honest assessment — including alternatives to removal if they exist.

Tree Removal FAQs

Common questions about tree removal costs, permits, and process in Southern Wisconsin.

How much does tree removal cost in Wisconsin?

Tree removal costs depend on tree size, species, location, and complexity. A straightforward 30-foot tree in an open yard might start around $500, while a large oak leaning over a house requiring crane-assisted removal can exceed $5,000. We provide free on-site estimates so you know the exact cost before any work begins.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Janesville or Beloit?

In most Wisconsin municipalities, you do not need a permit to remove trees on private residential property. However, Janesville and some surrounding communities require permits to remove street trees or trees in the public right-of-way. Trees in designated historic districts or near waterways may also require permits. We handle the permitting process for you when applicable.

How long does a tree removal take?

Most residential tree removals are completed in half a day. Large or technically complex removals — such as crane-assisted jobs or trees entangled in power lines — can take a full day. We always provide a time estimate during the initial consultation so you can plan accordingly.

What happens to the wood after the tree is removed?

We chip all branches on-site using our industrial chippers. Trunk sections are cut into manageable rounds that we haul away unless you want to keep them for firewood. Chips can be left on-site for mulch at no charge, or we haul everything away. Stump grinding is a separate service that we typically recommend at the same time.

Can you remove a tree close to my house without damaging it?

Yes. Technical tree removal near structures is one of our specialties. We use rigging systems to lower sections with ropes, and for the most challenging situations, our crane trucks can lift entire sections straight up and away from your home. Our crews are trained in advanced rigging and have never caused structural damage on a removal job.

Should I remove my tree or try to save it?

Not every declining tree needs to come down. Our ISA Certified Arborists will evaluate the tree's health, structural integrity, and risk to your property before recommending removal. If the tree can be preserved through pruning, cabling, or treatment, we will tell you. We only recommend removal when it is the safest or most practical option.
